Press release 3/2014
8.1.2014

Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto will visit Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, on 9–10 January. During his visit, the Minister will get acquainted with the humanitarian situation of Eritrea and the problems caused by the present state of Eritrea, the refugee problem in particular. At the same time, Finland will encourage Eritrea to increase its international interaction and enhance its dialogue with the EU.

During his visit, Minister Haavisto will meet President of Eritrea Isaias Afeverki and Minister of Foreign Affairs Osman Saleh Mohammed as well as representatives of the international community operating in the country, such as the UN and the EU.

Finland participates in the efforts to enhance the humanitarian situation of Eritrea chiefly through general assistance for the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR and the humanitarian aid donated to the Horn of Africa region.
