Comprehensive school students compete on their EU knowledge

Press Release 100/2013
2 May 2013

More than 6,500 ninth-graders in comprehensive school will compete in the national EU quiz this spring on 3 May. This is the third time the competition is held. More than 100 schools, nine of them Swedish-language schools, are participating. Schools from Enontekiö in Northern Finland to Fuengirola in Spain have registered for the competition. The most registrants are from Uusimaa and Southwest Finland.

The three students who perform best on the quiz and their teachers will be invited to Helsinki to attend the awards ceremony at the end of May. The awards will be given to the students by Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb. The highest scoring student from each region will also receive an award.

The competition tasks deal with EU-related information and social studies topics included in the ninth-grade Social Studies syllabus. The aim is to promote the studying of EU-related information throughout the whole age group and to bring the EU closer to young people.

The competition is organized by the Unit for Europe Information and Civic Information of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the HYOL ry, the Association for Teachers of History and Social Studies in Finland.
