Press release 244/2013
On Friday 24 May, the President of the Republic and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed Finland's participation in international crisis management.
At the moment, Finland has some 400 soldiers deployed to military crisis management operations, almost half of them in the Middle East: in the UNIFIL operation in South Lebanon and in the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization UNTSO in the Middle East. At present, Finland has 145 soldiers deployed to NATO's ISAF mission in Afghanistan. The operation will be brought to a conclusion by the end of 2014. Finland participates in the planning of a NATO-led follow-on mission to ISAF. Finland will also continue its participation in the operations taking place in the Western Balkans, the Horn of Africa, and Sahel.
Currently, of the 110 Finnish experts deployed to civilian crisis management tasks, 40 % are women. In civilian crisis management, Finland will continue to place strong emphasis on the EU's police operation in Afghanistan. Finland participates in seven EU-led civilian crisis management operations, including an EU mission to improve border security in Libya (EUBAM Libya) which is currently in the process of being deployed.
