Finland’s new UN strategy aims at better prioritisation and effectiveness

Press Release 150/2013
11 July 2013

The new UN Strategy of the Finnish Foreign Service has been completed. The purpose of the new strategy is to help Finland promote the country’s goals in the UN more effectively. The new strategy has a strong emphasis on sustainable development, and it defines the themes Finland will pay special attention to in the near future.

At the practical level, the aim of Finland’s work in the UN is to create the preconditions for sustainable development by advancing four themes. These themes are:

  • conflict prevention and resolution, including, among others, the promotion of mediation
  • the promotion of gender equality, including support for sexual and reproductive health and sexual and reproductive rights
  • support for democratic institutions and for the development of the rule of law in the work of the UN
  • the eradication of extreme poverty, the reduction of inequality and the promotion of environmental sustainability

Finland’s UN strategy will be launched at the SuomiAreena event in Pori on Wednesday, 17 July. The strategy will be presented by Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja.
