Foreign Minister Tuomioja and Development Minister Hautala to attend the UN General Assembly

Minister for Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja and Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala are attending the opening week of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York on 23–28 September. The Finnish delegation to the meeting is led by Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, who will deliver Finland’s statement to the General Assembly on Friday, 27 September.

During the opening week of the General Assembly, Finland gives prominence in particular to mediation, women's rights, development issues, disability rights, and arms control. This year, the General Assembly focuses especially on the UN Millennium Development Goals and the Post-2015 Development Agenda following thereon, and on the situation in Syria.

Foreign Minister Tuomioja, together with the Foreign Minister of Turkey, will host a Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Mediation on Thursday, 26 September. The meeting is the fourth ministerial-level meeting on the Finnish–Turkish joint initiative. The meeting will discuss, among other topics, the development of cooperation between the UN and regional organisations in mediation.

Foreign Minister Tuomioja will deliver the statement of the co-authors of the international Arms Trade Treaty at the High-level event dealing with the international Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). In addition, on 25 September Tuomioja and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay will co-host the sideline event on current challenges facing UN peacekeeping.

Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala will deliver Finland’s statement at the Special Event towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals on Wednesday, 25 September. On the same day Finland, together with Liberia and UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality, is organising a High-level event on the elimination of violence against women and girls. Minister Tuomioja will open the event and Minister Hautala will participate in the panel discussion together with a Minister from Liberia and the new Executive Director of UN Women.

Development Minister Hautala and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia will co-chair a roundtable discussion at the High-level Meeting on Disability and Development.

Foreign Minister Tuomioja will speak at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, dealing with the implementation of the Rio+20 Conference conclusions. He will also participate in meetings on Syria and the Sahel region, as well as meetings on nuclear disarmament and the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

In addition, both ministers will have numerous bilateral ministerial-level meetings and meetings with leaders of the UN agencies.

  • Development Minister Hautala and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia will co-chair a roundtable discussion at the High-level Meeting on Disability and Development.

Tuesday, 24 September

  • Opening of the General Assembly
  • Foreign Minister Tuomioja will speak at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Wednesday, 25 September

  • Development Minister Hautala will deliver Finland’s statement at the Special Event towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
  • Finland, together with Liberia and UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality, will organise a High-level event on the elimination of violence against women and girls.
  • High-level event dealing with the international Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), where Foreign Minister Tuomioja will give a statement in the name of the seven initiating countries.
  • Joint press conference of Finland and the other co-authors of the at the UN from 2:30 to 3:00 pm
  • Ministerial dinner hosted by Finland and Uruguay, “Strengthening the Partnership: A Fresh Dialogue on UN Peacekeeping”

Thursday, 26 September

  • Foreign Minister Tuomioja, together with the Foreign Minister of Turkey, will host a Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Mediation.
  • Joint press conference by the Foreign Ministers of Turkey and Finland at 9:45 to 10:00 am
  • Development Minister Heidi Hautala will deliver the opening speech at the sideline event on fragile states organised by UNDP.

Friday, 27 September

  • Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja will deliver Finland’s national statement.
