Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, will visit Helsinki on Thursday, 6 February. The UN annual International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting will be celebrated the same day. UNFPA is doing important work to end female genital mutilation/cutting during the next generation.The United Nations Population Fund is a long-term partner of Finland. Finland is among the organization’s biggest supporters, both financially and politically. Finland’s general funding in 2013 totalled 35.55 million euros. Through UNFPA Finland promotes sexual and reproductive health and rights as well as other development goals important to Finland: the reduction of maternal mortality, sexual and reproductive health services, and gender equality for all. UNFPA’s activities focus on the poorest countries and on women and young people.
While in Finland, Executive Director Osotimehin will meet with Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto and the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin has been the Executive Director of UNFPA since the beginning of 2011. By profession he is a physician and public health expert. Before this appointment, Dr. Osotimehin was Nigeria’s Minister of Health.
