Development Minister Pekka Haavisto is leading Finland’s delegation at the first worldwide meeting of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which is being held in Nairobi, Kenya on 23 to 27 June.
The main themes of the meeting are future sustainable development objectives, especially the promotion of sustainable modes of consumption and production, as well as the struggle against the illegal wildlife trade. A strong political message about these themes is expected at the end of the meeting.
Finland is increasing its impact on UNEP’s work by targeting development cooperation funds so that the annual support to UNEP will almost double to six million euros. In his speech Development Minister Haavisto emphasized the importance of strengthening UNEP and the importance of the success of the first global meeting.
It is important for incorporating the environmental dimension strongly into the future development objectives and for the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
“Making an environment-friendly and socially sustainable economy possible in developing countries is the key to reducing poverty and eliminating inequality.” Minister Haavisto stressed.
